H.K. Godshall Feed and Grain Mill

c. 1864 & 1882

Location of this building

The earlier part of the building was constructed by Herman K. Godshall as a feed and grain mill. It was acquired by Moyer & Bro., in 1869 and expanded in 1882. The business served the farming community.”

Original side of the mill

One of Souderton’s oldest businesses – today known as Moyer Indoor–Outdoor – began here in 1864 when Herman K. Godshall opened a feed store in the left portion of the building. He also operated a hay-baling business nearby on South Front Street. In 1867, his son-in-law, Aaron K. Frick, assumed control, selling the business two years later to brothers Christian H. and Jonas H. Moyer, who traded as Moyer & Bro.

Their brother Enos Moyer joined the firm in 1874, and the business continued under the same name. The substantial right-side addition was completed in 1882, dates that can still be seen near the roof peaks. For a time, the ground floor also housed a grocery store and restaurant operated by Abraham Stover and Jacob Allebach.

In 1903, John Moyer – son of Enos – joined the company, prompting a name change to Moyer & Son. A decade later, Michael R. Clemmer, another son-in-law, became a partner. Generations of the Moyer and Clemmer families operated the business for decades, expanding offerings from hay and feed to coal and a wide range of goods as customer needs evolved.

Operations at this Main Street location ended in 1966 when the business consolidated at its Reliance Road site. After several years of vacancy, the attached sheds were removed in 1972, and the building was converted into The Olde Mill apartments.
