Marker #1890 & 1909

The Souderton Independent Newspaper Office

c. 1890 & 1909

The location of this building

Once part of a larger complex that included a house and smaller buildings, this newspaper print shop was constructed in 1890, and the one to the right in 1909. Beginning in 1881, owner and editor William F. Goettler reported the news, shared details of the lives of area residents, and used its editorials to encourage growth and expansion.”

The original newspaper site

Founded in 1878 as the Germania Gazette by Charles L. Peale and William F. Goettler, the paper was published in German during its first year. When Goettler became sole owner, the newspaper transitioned to English and, in 1881, adopted the name Souderton Independent. In 1898, the firm became known as W.F. Goettler & Son when his son, R.B., joined the business.

After operating from several locations around town, the newspaper settled by the turn of the 20th century into the building on the left. In 1909, it moved a short distance to the building on the right, where it remained until being sold to a larger publishing company in 1989. The Independent was among the few weekly newspapers in Pennsylvania owned by a single family for generations.

The new facility after 1909

Initially published on Saturdays – timed to coincide with farmers’ visits to town – the paper later shifted to Friday, then Thursday, and finally Wednesday publication. Alongside national and international news, it delivered a rich blend of local reporting, community commentary, and spirited editorials.

It is said that Mr Goettler appreciated technology, and that the 1890 building was one of the first in town that was wired for electricity and a telephone. Also note the sign on top of the original building, which was later moved to the new 1909 building.

The historical markers were made possible by generous donations from Souderton Connects, Univest Corp, and the Souderton-Telford Historical Society. We hope you enjoy them.
